The College Experience

Being on a college campus is a unique life experience—a rite of passage for many young adults as they make the transition from high school to the adult world. Through our continuing education program, Pathways Plus, Ontario ARC will be offering classes at Finger Lakes Community College (FLCC) to students with developmental disabilities.

This new program, called the College Experience, provides learning opportunities for two groups of individuals, ages 18-21 and 22-26 years old. Sessions will begin this summer.

"The College Experience is a first in our area and we are excited about offering this to our participants," says Wendy Nelson, Community Opportunities Manager. "Students with developmental disabilities can now graduate from high school and go on to a college experience at FLCC, like their high school classmates. Through this experience, our participants will gain life skills and develop friendships with students who do not have developmental disabilities."

College Experience classes will teach life and work skills, and provide opportunities for students to "shadow" people at different work settings in the community. This exposure will help students choose a vocation and pursue relevant education and training.
