Ontario ARC prepares for next year's Cruisin' for a Cause after record breaking year

Ontario ARC's 19th annual Cruisin' for a Cause raised a record breaking $90,000 – but, the event shows no signs of slowing down just yet.

"Cruisin' for a Cause has gained a tremendous momentum and we definitely do not want to slow down," said Donna Auria, director of community relations. "Right now, we are focusing on expanding our committee and are seeking dynamic people who want to make a difference in their community."

The committee will start planning event logistics, soliciting sponsorships, selling tickets and reaching out to the community for support in early spring 2012. Interested parties can contact Auria at 585-919-2191 or dauria@ontarioarc.org to join the committee or get involved with the efforts.

"There are many different ways to get involved with this event – we truly have something for everyone," adds Auria.

Cruisin' for a Cause has a long history of success. It was originally a cruise aboard the Canandaigua Lady, which has an approximate capacity of 120 people, before Steamboat Landing was opened. As attendance grew, Cruisin' for a Cause moved inside the ballroom. This past year, more than 700 people turned out to participate in the live auction hosted by Channel 13's Doug Emblidge, drink complimentary wines and, of course, enjoy a ride on the Canandaigua Lady.

Local business partners with Ontario ARC to meet growing customer demands

James Ryan is building a business – and Ontario ARC is reaping the benefits.

Ryan is president of Kuvasz Companies, Inc. an eco-friendly greeting card company that features unique artwork on its covers. The Fairport-based business uses Ontario ARC's Pathways program to help fill and complete orders in a timely fashion. The program's participants assemble cards in its biodegradable packaging made from corn byproducts.

"It is really a 'win-win' for us," says Michelle Jungermann, director of day services. "The people who come to Pathways are getting a chance to gain skills that make them marketable to employers and we are helping a local business take off."

For Ryan, using Pathways was a no brainer.

"Kuvasz is committed to being active in our local communities," says Ryan. "Not only are we as eco-friendly as possible, but we donate a portion of our proceeds to Lollypop Farm and support other local non-profit organizations as well. Partnering with Ontario ARC just makes sense to us."

And, so far the partnership has paid off. The Pathways program has gone from assembling orders in the hundreds to now in the thousands as Kuvasz continues to expand its reach down the Eastern seaboard. Kuvasz cards are available in Maine to Washington, D.C. Locally, the cards can be purchased from Red Jacket Orchard's Farm Store in Geneva, Wade's Supermarket in Victor and CountryMax stores in Seneca Falls and Farmington.

"We are a local business with a focus on the environment and community involvement," adds Ryan. "As we continue to grow, so does our relationship with Ontario ARC."

More information about Kuvasz Companies, Inc. is available at www.kuvaszcompanies.com. For information about Ontario ARC's Pathways program, please contact JoEllen Meath, intake coordinator, at jmeath@ontarioarc.org.

Ontario ARC keeps the Cruise in "Cruisin'"

Attendees enjoy the scenic beauty of the Finger Lakes aboard the Canandaigua Lady.Despite the noted troubles with the Canandaigua Lady, Donna Auria wasn’t worried about the cruise portion of Ontario ARC’s upcoming Cruisin’ for a Cause.

“This agency is extremely fortunate to have strong support from the community,” says Auria, the agency’s director of development. “The Canandaigua Lady is a fun part of the night; but people attend because they truly believe in our agency and what we do.”

Now in its 18th year, Cruisin’ for a Cause is Ontario ARC’s only major, annual fund raiser held at Steamboat Landing – this year on Aug. 19 from 5 to 11 p.m. All proceeds from the event go towards the agency’s recreation program, which provides fun activities – sports, social, entertainment, and leisure – for children, teenagers, and adults with developmental disabilities throughout Ontario County.

“Recreation is one of the most important programs offered by the agency because it gives participants a chance to experience the same recreation opportunities everyone has,” adds Auria. “Plus, it provides a much needed balance to school, doctor’s appointments, and therapy sessions.”

This year, the event committee – which is comprised of parents, local business leaders, and agency staff – decided to change it up and breathe new life into the event. This included bringing on Caribbean Extravaganza – a steel drum band – and Rochester’s favorite band, Nik & the Nice Guys. For its auctions this year, Ontario ARC has lined up exciting items, including overnight trips to Atlanta, Ga. or Orlando, Fl., tickets to a Yankees game, a vacation package to the Caribbean and a week at a condo at Smuggler’s Notch.

“It’s a great way to snag a vacation for the family and also support Ontario ARC,” says Auria. “Our committee works extremely hard to secure the best auction packages in the area.”

Tickets are still available for $60 each by contacting Auria at 585-919-2191 or dauria@ontarioarc.org. More information about Cruisin’ for a Cause is available at www.ontarioarc.org/cruisin.

Agency receives $64,000 grant from New York State's Department of Transportation

Ontario ARC has received a combined $64,000 grant from New York State’s Department of Transportation’s Job Access and Reverse Commute (JARC) program and New Freedom program to enhance transportation services for individuals with developmental disabilities throughout Ontario County.

Hurlburt will provide instruction about public transportation, community safety, and time management to increase people’s independence. Prior to this position, Hurlburt was the warehouse manager in the agency’s Abbey Industries Workcenter.

The Finger Lakes Bus Service – the name of the agency’s transportation services – currently maintains 90 vehicles that drive approximately one million miles yearly. The bus service transports 1,000 children, teenagers, and adults with developmental disabilities to and from a variety of activities each year.

“Transportation is an important component of the services provided by Ontario ARC,” says Brenda Estey, the agency’s associate executive director of support services. “It helps people access employment opportunities, social and recreation events, and services in our community.”

The JARC program is designed to assist low-income individuals to and from work and other activities related to their employment. The New Freedom program’s goal is to improve transportation services and other transportation alternatives for individuals with disabilities. Both programs are monitored by New York State’s Department of Transportation.
